Nile Lodge is a Locally Listed building set within generous grounds in Ealing, West London.

Originally a single family dwelling, the building has been extended and modified several times, and was most recently in use as a convent.

Inspired by the collegiate character of the surrounding context and colonnaded courtyard typologies of university buildings, MDLR’s design proposals envisage a new shared living scheme focussed around an internal shared courtyard.

Symmetrical in plan, the courtyard type building is formed by the retained locally Listed element – which contains all of the shared amenities and facilities – and the creation of 2 new rear wings.

Roof forms and geometry reference the existing retained building, and the Victorian character of the surrounding context.

Just a short distance from Ealing Broadway, the scheme offers residents a sense of sanctuary and seclusion, with the convenience of city living within walking distance.

The proposals will provide much needed affordable accommodation for key workers & young professionals in the locale.

In the rear, 9 new generous family homes are proposed. The houses are arranged to form a shared ‘street’ accessible to pedestrians only where residents can socialise and relax.

Various house types offer a range of living styles and the mix of contemporary forms compliment one another as well as the neighbouring Conservation Area.
