SAV Group is a young, dynamic, ambitious property development company. They specialise in the shared living and built-to-rent sector. This project was the first time we had worked with this client and we were excited to build a relationship with them. They got us on board to help with their development because they liked our initial design response, receptiveness, and can-do attitude.
What started as initial feasibility sketches to improve planning consent for 22 apartments, eventually resulted in a full 3 phase project comprising:
- Conversion of a post-modern, 1980s office building into quality, desirable homes.
- Navigation through complex legislative constraints.
- Completion of the initial phase in less than 12 months, including the technical design and construction period.
- Building a co-living scheme overlooking the newly created school on site.
- Successfully overcoming development resistance from the LPA and residents.
This project began a successful working relationship with SAV Group, who have become a longstanding Client & Collaborator. We provided full architectural services for all stages of the project, overcoming the challenges of every phase and exceeding expectations by:
- Devising a more efficient conversion of the existing building providing 45 rental studios and 1-bedroom apartments.
- Adding a 2-storey airspace extension through a carefully considered and contextual design to obtain planning permission.
- Successfully designing, obtaining planning consent and delivering a 4-storey new built co-living scheme on the unused car park on site.
- Reducing CO2 emission through the reuse of the existing structure and upgrading external fabric to current standards.
We were able to find solutions that both exceeded SAV Group’s commercial expectations and delighted the managing agents and residents with the quality of the completed apartments. Our residential design expertise and vision for urban regeneration meant we attained successful planning outcomes on the first attempt across all phases of the project, demonstrating our ability to deliver complex projects at scale.
A considered contextual design both maximised site’s potential and blended well with the area, improving the local built environment. For example, replacing windows with full height glazing, and using dyed brick to give the building new lease of life.
This project enabled the provision of quality, affordable self-contained accommodation in the local market. Overall, 85 apartments of different sizes meet different housing needs: from self-contained flats to smaller co-living studios with shared amenities. Following this, we were involved in the post occupation evaluation of the development and have forged a strong relationship with SAV group over the last 7 years.
